Privacy Policy – The Quantitative Quill

Welcome to the Quantitative Quill, accessible from kentbutt.com. I care deeply about personal privacy (as many of you lucky enough to know me in person have likely heard), and I attempt to uphold that here. This Privacy Policy outlines the types of information I collect, how it is used, and the measures I take to protect it, in compliance with Alberta’s Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). 1. Information Collection and Use

I collect emails and, optionally, names from visitors who choose to subscribe to my mailing list. This information is used exclusively for two purposes:

a) to manage the mailing list and to send updates, posts, and other mass emails related to the Quantitative Quill.

b) to send you personal emails, should I not already have another preferred way to contact you, especially when I no longer have access to my Canadian phone number.

I also collect the data shown in the comment form and additionally the visitors IP address and browser user agent string from people who leave comments on posts. This is used to display the comments and for spam prevention. Should you click ‘save my name, email and website in the browser for the next time I comment’ a cookie will be used to keep track of this request.

I collect this information based on your consent, which can be withdrawn at any time by unsubscribing (for the mailing list) or by contacting me.

I will not use the information for purposes outside of those stated above, and I will not sell your information.

2. Data shared with Third Party Service Provider

The information collected on the Quantitative Quill is managed by Dreamhost. Dreamhost, based in California, U.S., ensures that your data is not shared or sold and is handled in full compliance with applicable laws and their own privacy policy. They do not sell or share mailing lists. The United States has less comprehensive privacy and data controls than Alberta, and you or I may have limited recourse in case of a dispute.

3. Data Protection

I am committed to protecting your information with appropriate physical, electronic, and managerial procedures designed to secure the information I collect online. Specifically, I commit to using a strong password to control my websites account, and the website uses HTTPS.

4. Your Data Rights

Under Alberta’s PIPA, you have the right to:

– Request access to your personal information I hold.

– Correct any inaccuracies in your personal information. You may update your name or email by unsubscribing and re-subscribing.

– Withdraw your consent to the use of your personal information at any time, leading to its deletion from my records. This may be done by unsubscribing, or by contacting me.

To exercise any of these rights, please contact me via the email provided at the end of this policy.

5. Retention of Personal Information

I retain your personal information for only as long as necessary to fulfill the purposes for which it was collected, including any legal or reporting requirements. Upon unsubscribing from my mailing list, your personal information is deleted from my sites backend. With the exception of any emails I have written down to communicate with an individual personally, I will no longer have access to your email after you unsubscribe. Comments are retained indefinitely, you can contact me for deletion.

6. Breach Notification

In the unlikely event of a breach of security leading to the accidental or unlawful destruction, loss, alteration, unauthorized disclosure of, or access to, personal data, I will notify you and the appropriate Alberta authorities as required by PIPA. I use a strong password to protect my website management account, however that is no guarantee of security.

7. Embedded content from other websites

Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracking your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Should you wish to avoid embedded content, please email me and I can send you stripped down versions of my articles, or use an appropriate browser which blocks embedded content.

8. Changes to This Privacy Policy

I reserve the right to update my Privacy Policy at any time. I will notify you of any changes by posting the new Privacy Policy on my website, and by sending it out to my mailing list.

9. Jurisdictional Compliance

I do not guarantee adherence to any other national or international privacy policies. I only guarantee adherence to the above.
